How does the Hunt work?

A new clue appears daily in the St. Paul Pioneer Press for twelve days — or until the medallion is found. The goal is to decipher the clues and find the medallion, which is worth $10,000 and is hidden somewhere in the snow in St. Paul.

Hunters line up at the Pioneer Press at 11:00PM each night to buy the newspaper as soon as it goes on sale. Afterwards, they head off to the parks — armed with lanterns, flashlights, shovels and other digging implements — to dig for the medallion in sub-zero temperatures in the middle of the night.

What does the medallion look like?

The medallion used from 1991-2004 was made of translucent blue Lucite and is approximately two inches in diameter and one-half inch thick. From 1952-1957 the medallion was a treasure chest.

In 1958 the Pioneer Press switched to a bronze medallion that was used through 1987. During the 1980s, the medallion was found (perhaps unfairly) four times by hunters using metal detectors, which caused the Pioneer Press to switch to a non-metallic version in 1988.

The medallion was widely photographed after the 2004 hunt find, so to ensure no duplicates could be made, the Pioneer Press retired the old medallion and auctioned it off during the 2005 hunt (it sold for a whopping $6,000). The new 2005 medallion was also used for the 2006 and 2007 hunts. After the first 2007 hunt, the medallion was once again heavily photographed. Will there be a new medallion in 2008?

The No Time for Cold Feet DVD extras contain a Medallion Featurette about the lure, mystery and history of the medallion.

Who hides the treasure and when is it hidden?

It is publicly unknown who or how many people are involved in the clue writing and medallion-hiding process. For the past fifty-six years it has been and still is one of the best-kept secrets in Saint Paul.

Conspiracy theories abound regarding the hunt and hiding of the treasure. No one really knows exactly when it is hidden.

The No Time for Cold Feet DVD extras contains nearly an hour of in-depth interviews with former Clue Writers Don Boxmeyer and Larry Millet.
