Jackie Garry, Filmmaker: We need this to tell the story.

Diana Pierce, Anchor: New York has their cameras focused on a very popular Saint Paul winter tradition. The 50th Annual Treasure Hunt for the Winter Carnival medallion is garnering a lot of attention. Not only will the person that finds the medallion earn big bucks, they may also earn a starring role in a film. KARE 11's Ken Speake reports.

Ken Speake, Reporter (Voice-Over): Marydale Park. One of those places familiar to neighbors... and medallion hunters.

Shot of Medallion Hunter Jake Ingebrigtson

Jake Ingebrigtson, Medallion Hunter: "A man of steel that can't be real." And, uh, I was kind of thinking that might refer to Superman, Clark Kent. And there's Kent Street, I think, right over there.

Ken Speake, Reporter (Voice-Over): Hunt fanatic, Jake Ingebrigtson -- he calls himself a fanatic -- was kinda kidnapped by a documentary film crew. He appreciated the attention, but he did leave off work to hunt for the medallion, and these folks were kinda cutting into his hunting time.

Trent Tooley, Filmmaker: Let's go shoot them, but before we leave... I just wanna get...

Ken Speake, Reporter (Voice-Over): Trent Tooley is co-producer, co-editor, and husband of Jackie Garry there.

Jackie Garry, Filmmaker: Have him tell his story of a near-miss.

Ken Speake, Reporter (Voice-Over): They're independent filmmakers from New York City who... well... Jackie Garry grew up in Rochester (Minnesota) and has always been kind of fascinated with the idea of making a film about the medallion hunt.

Jackie Garry, Filmmaker: People in Minnesota say we're nuts. They're like, "You guys are insane -- what are you doing?"

Trent Tooley, Filmmaker: She goes, "You know there's this thing that they do in Saint Paul -- it's so crazy. They take this little medallion and they bury it in the snow, and everyone goes and digs for it for twelve days."

Shot of Jake Ingebrigtson being filmed by Bud Gardner and boomed by Philip Dixon.

Jake Ingebrigtson, Medallion Hunter: It will always be in the snow or on top of the snow.

Shot of M.K. Everts (a.k.a. "Green")

M.K. Everts (a.k.a. "Green"), Medallion Hunter: It's exciting... it's uh... I think they're crazy.

Ken Speake, Reporter (Voice-Over): The whole thing is kinda crazy. M.K. Everts and Jake Ingebrigtson are members of the Cooler Crew, folks who enjoy the hunt so much they meet year-round to talk about it.

Misc. shots of crew with equipment

Trent Tooley, Filmmaker: You have a million theories all the time.

Ken Speake, Reporter (Voice-Over): It's that fascination the filmmakers hope to document, and to make a story of... and sell... and... and hopefully make some money. Ken Speake, KARE 11 News, Saint Paul.

Back to KARE 11 Studio

Diana Pierce, Anchor: Jackie Garry and Trent Tooley hope to have their film ready to show in Saint Paul next year before the medallion hunt starts again.
